Mary G. Davis papers, 1838 Apr. 14-1842 Jan. 18.

Correspondence includes 14 Apr. 1838, Columbia, S.C. to her sister, Miss R.A. Davis, Society Hill, S.C., re news of mutual acquaintances, her satisfaction with life in Columbia and the school, but she suspects much of that was due to presence of "Nathan," stating that a function at Mrs. Hampton's was the only party that she had attended, reporting plans for the school to have a May party and selection of the May queen, and commenting on her experiences at Mrs. Martin's school, where her studies included French and music, reporting that "as for music, Mrs. Martin does not give me much encouragement." Also includes 2 letters, 1841 and 1842, from classmate Louise McCaa; letter, 16 June 1841, Kirkwood (Camden, S.C.), to Davis (Monticello, S.C.), re weddings among the young and old, with more entertainments anticipated with the former than the latter; travels of mutual friends, including Mr. Prudhomme, who planned to live in Europe for four years; other topics discussed include McCaa's description of her daily routine of rising at 5 a.m. for two hours of horseback riding before breakfast, because she was "dying of ennui"; McCaa also reports the engagement of Mary Dunkin to Cleland Huger, and inquires if Davis intends to accompany her brother to the North this summer. Later letter, 18 Jan. [18]42, Charleston, S.C., from McCaa to Davis, Monticello, S.C., re her boarding situation, regretting Davis' absence from Charleston, discussing whereabouts of mutual friends, and reporting plans to attend a dance as part of the elaborate evening wedding ceremonies of Mary Dunkin and Cleland Huger, during which the couple were to be wed at 7:00, after which at 8:00 the company of 300 invited guests were scheduled to arrive for the ball; McCaa's other social activities included a visit to Mrs. Bennet's, where she finally saw "the carriage that cost twelve hundred dollars and it is nothing uncommon after all."
